Sound Quality Meets AI

The smart speaker market has matured. What started as novelty voice assistants has evolved into legitimate speakers with smart features. We tested five models across sound quality, voice accuracy, smart home integration, and privacy.

Sound Testing

We played the same 10-track playlist at 70dB (conversation level) scoring bass response, midrange clarity, treble detail, and balance. Both in a treated room and untreated living room.

The Sonos Era 100 delivered most balanced sound with punchy bass at $249 -- best-sounding here though only Spotify Connect, no built-in voice assistant.

Voice Assistant Accuracy

We tested 30 common commands in quiet and noisy conditions (TV moderate volume):

  • Google Assistant: 94% quiet / 82% noisy -- Best Overall
  • Alexa: 92% quiet / 79% noisy -- Close Second
  • Siri: 85% quiet / 71% noisy -- Still Behind

Smart Home Integration

Alexa supports over 100,000 devices across Matter, Zigbee, and WiFi. Google covers 85% of that ground. Siri/HomeKit remains most restricted but also most privacy-focused with on-device processing when possible.
